Research Indicates Men With BRCA2 Gene Mutation Should Undergo PSA Testing

Medscape (11/8, Davenport, Subscription Publication) reported a study of over 3,000 men suggests those “who carry the BRCA2 gene mutation, which is linked to breast and ovarian cancer, are at risk of developing aggressive prostate cancer and so should undergo regular prostate-specific antigen (PSA) testing.” The findings indicate “that men who carried the BRCA2 mutations were almost twice as likely to develop prostate cancer than were noncarriers” and were “diagnosed with prostate cancer at a younger age and had more clinically significant disease.” The findings were published in European Urology and presented at the National Cancer Research Institute 2019 Cancer Conference.
